Australia’s gas market is facing a familiar test. Global prices are surging on the back of geopolitical conflict, yet domestic prices have so far remained relatively stable.

Energy producers including Origin Energy and major LNG exporters are now moving to reassure customers that local gas prices will not immediately follow international markets higher, despite a sharp spike overseas.

The situation echoes the energy crisis of 2022, when global shocks quickly flowed through to domestic energy bills. This time, however, the dynamics appear more contained, at least for now.
